Pregnant Great White Shark Captured and Sold in Taiwan

A pregnant female great white shark with 14 cubs was accidentally caught by fishermen off the coast of Taiwan. However, instead of releasing it, they sold it on the auction market.

Reporting from the Taiwan English News, on Wednesday, fishermen from Yilan, caught a great white shark in Dong'ao Bay. It is 4.2 meters long and weighs 1,170 kilograms.

The fisherman then sold it at the auction market Nang-fang-ao Fishing Harbor in Su'ao City, Yilan County, for 1,898 NT dollars or 50 NT dollars per kilogram.

Images from a local news agency showing a great white shark and its 14 cubs being removed from their bodies are unbelievable. The 14 young sharks appear to be almost fully developed and ready for adventure in the open ocean. However, their process was stopped when their mother was caught.

How the white shark got caught is unclear, but according to David Ebert, shark scientist and director of the Pacific Shark Research Center, it may be caught in a set net - a large net in water that can catch anything swimming near it.

The shark was later purchased by a marine taxidermy company called the Taiwan Ocean Art Museum.

“My guess is that whoever buys it wants a shark jaw. Each large white jaw is of great value to collectors, "explains Burgess.

It is known that the shark was sold for only a few pounds to the taxidermy company. This means that the shark's remains may be sold in the market for consumption.

However, before the sharks were actually consumed, Burgess and her colleagues tried their best to contact shark buyers. They want to get tissue samples from mother sharks and their chicks.

"From a scientist's point of view, this is interesting because discoveries of pregnant sharks don't happen very often. They are rarely seen, "said Burgess.

The world's white shark population is critically endangered. This species is also classified as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
