Sourced from a Farm Fertilizer Factory Containing Thousands of Ammonium Nitrates, Here's How to Handling Lebanese Citizens Affected by Explosions



The Lebanese capital, Beirut, was rocked by a powerful explosion that attracted worldwide attention on Tuesday (4/8/2020) evening local time.

The explosion, located in the port area, shook the entire capital, shook buildings, and caused panic among residents.

It is known, the source of the explosion came from an agricultural fertilizer factory which has 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab stated that the fertilizer was stored for years in a warehouse by the sea.

Ammonium nitrate is widely used in fertilizers and explosives.

The Australian state government occupational health and safety website explains why the substance is so explosive.

"Ammonium nitrate does not burn. However, it will support and increase the rate of combustion in the presence of combustible or combustible materials even in the absence of oxygen.

When heated, it melts, decomposes, and releases toxic gases, including nitrogen oxides (NO x) and ammonia gas (NH 3).

When heated to excess (for example in a fire) it can cause explosion in confined spaces and closed containers or vessels may burst violently.

Symptoms may include: cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, or even suffocation.

When ingested in high concentrations, ammonium nitrate can cause headaches, dizziness, stomach pain, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, tingling sensations, circulation and heart irregularities, convulsions, collapse, and suffocation.

Ammonium nitrate forms a mild acid when mixed with water.

This acid can also cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and skin.

There are several ways of handling that can be done to reduce these symptoms from becoming severe.

Handling eye contact:
1. Examine and remove contact lenses.
2. Immediately flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, keeping eyelids open.
3. Get medical help if irritation persists.

1. Wash irritated skin with soap and water.
2. Dry and cover the skin with a good quality dermatological skin care lotion.
3. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
